History and Usage

This program was brought about because I wanted an easier way to test web sites for other people. Specifically a main request of web site testing is cross browser compatability, in that the site should have the same look and feel, have all the same features available to the site (e.g. CSS JavaScript etc) and basically the site should 'work' in as many browsers as possible. This has meant in the past that I had to at best :-

1. Load a browser (e.g - Internet Explorer)
2. Enter the site address into the address bar
3. Copy that address (CTRL - C to the clipboard)
4. Open up another browser (e.g Mozilla)
5. Paste the address (into Mozilla) and Go.
6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 upto the amount of browsers I test with. (Currently 9)

Needless to say after a few sites I got a bit bored of the same old routine and so decided to write my own simple little application which can , given a specified website address , open up as many or as little Web Browsers with the click of a single button.

I am therefore pleased to announce the release of MTBrowser, a collaboration between MiniTutorials, Independent-Testers.org and IWDP.co.uk. Originally pre-titled MultiBrowser because of its primary function but shortened to MTBrowser due to the fact a MultiBrowser product and website already exist. 'MT' also stands for MiniTutorials so fits in quite well.

Installation and Uninstallation

Installer Package Version.

With the Installer package, this is all done for you. To Install once downloaded, just run the 'setup.exe' file and follow the prompts. To Uninstall, Locate the MTBrowser entry in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and follow the prompts.

Standalone Version

With the standalone version (zipped or unzipped) To Install just run the downloaded MTBrowser.exe file To Uninstall delete the downloaded MTBrowser.exe file

With the standalone version Registry entries are not deleted. This either needs to be done manually or by downloading and using our MTRegClean utility.

Manual Deletion.

1. Click the 'Start' button then click the 'Run' button
2. in the dialog box type in 'regedit' then press 'Enter' key or Return.
3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MultiB
4. Right Click the 'MultiB' key and click 'Delete'
5. Click 'Yes' to confirm deletion of MultiB key and all SubKeys.

As with all Registry operations , it is recommended that a backup of the Registry be made first. If you are uncomfortable with the prospect of editing the Windows Registry then please use the Utility provided or download the Installer Version of MTBrowser instead.

MTRegClean Utility.

Available in version 1.0 which is the current version and compatible with all standalone versions of MTBrowser.

Additional Information

MTBrowser Beta Release 2.5 as of 21/12/05

The current release and preferred choice.

This release sees a MAJOR ADDITION to all previous versions.
The addition of a new tool - the 'Color Checker' which checks for and advises whether a PASS or FAIL has been obtained according to WCAG Guidelines Checkpoint 2.2.
More details in the Changelog.

MTBrowser Beta Release 2.4 as of 23/11/05

Contains mainly bug fixes over versions 2.2 and 2.3. (Changelog)

MTBrowser Beta Release 2.3 as of 10/10/04

mainly bug fixes from version 2.2.

MTBrowser Beta Release 2.2 as of 08/07/04

Browser Search engine within the program has been re-designed to take full advantage and therefore rely much more on the registry for finding installed Browsers. This change has meant almost instant reaction times when first loading program and on subsequent finds of newly installed Browsers.

MTBrowser Beta Release 2.1.1 As of 17.06.04

Some bug fixes and minor visual enhancements - items now put into group boxes.
Added functions include drop down menu giving 5 last tested URLs. This older version
is the latest and last version to use the older and slower method of searching through
the Hard Drive(s) when finding newly installed Browsers - this has been reported to take
as much aas 10 minutes to complete on older and slower computer systems. Only use
this version if the newer versions do not work for you.

Since the programs initial release back in January, there have been some reports of the program
getting versions of Netscape mixed up. I have tested this thoroughly now and have come to the
conclusion that (at this time) I can not do anything about it. Basically if you have a version 6 and
a version 7 of Netscape, then only one of them will open (and possibly 2 copies). Now, if only
version 6 is ticked, it will open correctly, if only version 7 is ticked, it will open correctly - if both
are ticked then due to the fact that both versions use some of the same shared core components
(such as what are needed for Profiles etc) then only one version can be open at any one time. I
have tested this outside of MTBrowser and the reaction is still the same.

The above statement is not affected by Netscape Navigator 4. You can open NN4 and Netscape 6
at the same time , and also NN4 and Netscape 7. If I find a workaround (or if anyone knows one)
then I will implement it.

Downloads Area

Which download is best ?

Ok, obviously smaller is better for downloading over the net, but bigger is better at the other end as an Installer Version makes it easy for you. FTP is usually quicker at file tranfers than HTTP as thats what it was intended for. For files small in size there is negligible difference in this case. A standalone non-zipped executable version has also been made available for those without a WinZip capable file extractor. The Installer Package prompts for where you want the program installed to, provides Start Menu and Desktop Icon choices and maybe more importantly for some an automatic uninstaller for the program should it be needed. Both non-installer versions contain just two files - the MTBrowser.exe executable file which you run from where you downloaded it to, and its companion MTBChangelog.txt. The Standalone versions does not remove registry entries (see Installation and Uninstallation above for details on how to do this). FTP downloads have been removed as I see no need for them in the case of these files being so small in size.
