Apache Web Server.

ActivePerl and AWStats Installation Instructions.

Intermediate Level

Installing and configuring a site stat analyser (AWStats 6.4)

Following on from the installation of the Apache Web Server, the next logical step - before adding things like PHP and MySQL - is to add a stats analyser for your site, so you can start recording and analysing your site stats right from the beginning.

We are going to be using AWStats , because this is what I use and find it more than adequate for small to medium sized sites. As I don't have a 'large' site I can't comment on its accuracy or adequacy but all the neccesary stuff seems to be there.

Now , this is a relatively easy process that might at first seem harder than it is, but hopefully I have done all the hard work and all you need to do is follow the steps and your done, subsituting the words 'mysite.com' for your actual site name (as in the Apache Tutorial)

As AWStats is Perl based we need to install a Perl Interpreter first to take anvantage of this - will also come in handy for other stuff later on. (Tutorials making use of Perl are being written and will be added soon). But dont let the word 'Perl' put you off, we just install it and leave it alone, easy

As with all servers and programs that use servers, such as AWStats, vulnerabilities arise and patches are created. There have been several such vulnerabilities found in versions 6.3 and below so you are encouraged to upgrade or install version 6.4 and above. I would also advise protecting your site stats as explained at the end of this section.
