This installation of the latest release (as of 15/07/06)
of Apache Version 2 was performed on Windows XP SP2.
There may be local variations that you will need to contend with, such
as for Windows 98 you should use the latest Version 1 release
instead. You may need to re-boot your computer and/or start the Apache
Server afterwards manually.
If you have another web server installed you will need to decide which one
you want to give port 80 to and assign 8080 (or similar) to either Apache or
the other.
If your Apache does not work after following these instructions, then (after reading the Apache FAQ) please feel free to fire away with some questions - 'How do I ask questions?' I hear you cry. Easy, join the Forums and ask away, or give your comments on this or any other Tutorial on this site.
This installation will configure your Web Server ready for the use of SSI (Server Side Includes) ; PHP version 5.x.x ; VirtualHosts so you can then add on extra Web Sites with ease. Please read the Apache Docs afterwards to make sure you are familiar with what Security Aspects you will need to be aware of when having a Web Server installed on your Computer. If installing on another drive other than C:\ and in other directories than suggested then please take this into account and amend accordingly. Future PHP and MySQL installation instructions will assume these settings also.
This is a 'get it working first' type of Tutorial and makes little or no comments as to what does what, so, get it working first, then read the DOCS or ask questions in the Forums to learn more afterwards.
Also note that the Apache Version 2.2.x releases differ in their configurations than the 2.0.x series, in that the config file has been split up into 'modules' that can be included into the main config file. You will see this as the tutorial progresses.
Step 1 : Download the latest version of Apache.
Goto http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi and
look for the latest stable release. This is currently 2.2.2 and is the
version we will use here. Click the link "apache_2.2.2-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi" and
Save to an appropriate part of your hard drive. Thats the hard part done
then :)
